5 Elegant Ways to Wear a Fedora Hat

Updated: May 17, 2022

“A piece of magic is a hat” Martha Sliter

Fedora hats are one of my favourite ways to finish off my outfits, it really brings a "je ne sais quoi" to any outfit. It’s timeless, versatile, suits everyone (yes, really!) and makes you stand out from the crowd. It's also a good choice to pick when you can't be bothered to do your hair.

I've been wanting a neutral, light coloured fedora for a while now and struggled to find one in my size (I have a very small head and always struggle to get a hat to fit me) but there she was, from Hicks & Brown. Very impressed with this hat so far, it's well made, comes in a wide range of sizes, colours, styles and pretty reasonably priced for the quality. Also like that it's a family run business and all products are made in the UK.

Here are five ways I've styled my new hat, hope you like it and find out which outfit was my favourite!

1. A Classic and Timeless Camel Coat

A true classic that every woman should have in her wardrobe! So versatile and will elevates any outfit. For this ensemble I decided to go for my off white wide leg trousers with a gold thin-knit jumper. Accessorised with minimal gold jewellery, my beige leather handbag, snakeskin print heels and white leather belt with a gold buckle pulled this whole outfit beautifully together.

My advice when choosing a coat is to buy an investment piece. What do i mean by that you ask? Buy a good quality fabric such as wool mix with cashmere, angora, camel hair, etc. This is what really makes the difference. Your outfit will look more polished, it will last you longer, feel and look better on. Mine is from Jaeger and made from a wool and cashmere blend. Bought mine from Ebay a couple of years ago and was an unbelievable bargain. The fabric still looks beautiful now and I've worn it many times.

This one from Jaeger on Marks & Spencer is beautiful and can just see the fabric quality just from the photos. This one is my favourite!

Hobbs do some really nice camel coats and are very good quality, some made from 100% wool. This one is less camel and more tan colour but still beautiful and so vibrant.

Here is a short version if you're not into long coats and still on sale.

This one is also very nice and a little bit more casual. At £199 for a good quality coat, you can't go wrong with it.

2. Keep it in Casual Layers

I’ve been wanting to wear this particular outfit for a long time but didn’t have the hat for it and let’s face it, wearing white is just daunting! Got my high waisted and super comfortable white trousers, oversized crisp white shirt underneath, mine is from H&M and had it for years. Layered with this cropped knitted vest I got from H&M. Wrapped this chunky knitted jumper on my shoulders, just for extra texture (it's H&M again, I love this shop and no, I'm not getting paid to say this)

Styled it with my white leather trainers and my stone canvas bucket bag.

3. Wear With a Cape Coat

I love a cape coat, it just exudes luxury! Team it with a light coloured cape coat, same colour trousers (I got mine from H&M last year and really love them) a cashmere jumper in a similar colour and a pair of smart mid heel slingbacks (mine are Chanel but there’s loads of dupes you can find, I’ll list a couple below). Accessorised with my beige leather handbag from Giorgio Armani, I got it from Vestiaire Collective for around £80.

Finished the outfit with minimal gold jewellery, I like to keep it simple when it comes to jewellery.

Marks and Spencers do a nice version that are made from leather and reasonably priced at £39.50.

Dunes probably have the most similar version I've seen and for £95, its a pretty good deal.

If you're not into heels, Asos do a really cute flats version and very cheap, only £18!

4. Wide Leg Trousers

A new obsession of mine, high waisted wide leg trousers; these make me feel like I'm in Cote D’azur! And any piece of clothing that makes you feel like that is worth wearing over and over again.

Found these beautiful trousers on eBay. Top is from Malene Birger, had it for ages but only worn it once, was about to sell it and then discovered that it had pockets. Love a pocket so had to find new ways to wear it. Adding a belt to it completely changed it and took it from a baggy, oversized style to a more polished and put together look. Styled it with my Giorgio Armani bag and this awesome snakeskin pattern shell coat I found at a designer sample sale in London.

Shoes are from Kurt Geiger London in nude patent leather.

5. High Waisted Jeans

This outfit gave me Country Audrey Hepburn vibes. Love the pointy toe flat ballerinas in mint green matching the belt. Worn with a silk baby blue shirt that I tucked in for a more pulled together look. Finished with a long grey coat that complemented the colour scheme.

Let me know your thoughts on these outfits and which one was your favourite? Mine was the outfit with the long camel coat! X

Ps: spot the little remote in my hand :))
